Why form WMSH?

I used to work in the music industry, managing venues, producing shows and working on festivals. It was exciting and challenging, but I wanted to bring the engineer and tinkerer in me to work and saw an opportunity to form a new kind of creative production company.

Outside of work…

I’ll be outdoors hiking in the woods, along cliffs, by rivers or the sea, enjoying the fresh air and swimming (when its warm enough!).

JD is a detail-oriented communications and branding specialist with a passion for sustainability and community. Having worked as an events promoter, DJ and advertising copywriter, she’s excellent at marrying the technicalities of production with creative ideas. JD has led the company with a program of sustainable, steady growth based on investment in skills and specialisation in the arts and environmental and social responsibility.

Why form WMSH?

I was looking for a challenge at a company that would utilise both my branding and creative skills and love of events and production. That company didn’t exist, so Fraser and I started it on a kitchen table. I also wanted to do good for people in building a workplace that values unique perspectives and supports well being and growth.

Your impromptu TED talk will be on…

Downton Abbey’s exploration of queerness, the working class, and PTSD, and why Thomas Barrow isn’t a villain, actually. I will bring my own gifs.

Alice has over 20 years’ experience working in the production of live events, festivals and experiential activations. She specialises in logistics, planning, site management, technical production management, overseeing complex builds and breaks, and liaising with clients, brands and council organisations.

Strangest thing you’ve done at WMSH?

Help a Cirque de Soleil fire eater visit different hardware stores in Ibiza when his fire-eating fuel didn’t arrive on time…and help him mix and test different types of petrol in car parks-their burn time, the amount of smoke they produced, the colour of the smoke, etc.

Colour: Purple. Animal: Unicorn. Time of year: Summer. Hot beverage: Chai latte. Hype-up song: The Fighter (Keith Urban ft. Carrie Underwood).

With a 12-year background in PR, social media, marketing and events, Megan specialises in idea generation, creative conception and experiential production. Her focus lies on using strong creative ideas and language to generate a connection between brand and consumer, delivering real results and building great client relationships.

Most rewarding part of WMSH?

Seeing the reactions of members of the public to things we’ve made or produced; it’s great to know that you’ve brought a little bit of joy to someone’s day! I also enjoy creativity and variety, so a job that offers new problems almost daily is a no-brainer.

Outside of work…

When my three children allow, I love painting, making my own clothes, walking and summer beach days.

Danabel has a background in furniture design and manufacturing, with experience designing bespoke cabinetry and joinery for the new-build residential sector. She later moved into the events industry, combining technical expertise with creative spatial builds of all sizes.

Strangest thing you’ve done at WMSH?

Trying to form a fake dead body out of wrapping paper and putting a bow on it, like a present, to promote a film release. No one was harmed, they were just outlined.

Outside of work…

I’m thrifting good bargains, mooching around antique shops, visiting art museums, history, travelling, and playing video games

With over 20 years of experience in venues, events, and music, Oli uses his expertise to make things happen.

Saara came to WMSH after organising music events and tours of orchestras around the UK and Europe. She’s adapted those skills to handling logistics on festivals and activations and developed her understanding of–amongst other things–making bespoke plushies and giant gloves.

Megan C previously split her time between managing operations for a high end bespoke tailor and herding volunteers at some of the UK’s biggest festivals. Now, she manages crew bookings, logistics, and outreach recruitment, and is a tech whizz, setting up a crewing app in her first few weeks.

Having previously worked at a B Corp as a spatial interior designer, Harry came to WMSH with a strong foundation in sustainability. In addition to his design training, he has also undertaken a carpentry and joinery course and is at home both in the workshop and behind a screen. Having initially started at WMSH as an intern, Harry’s visualisations caught our—and our client’s—eye and he was offered a permanent role first as a Designer/Fabricator before being promoted to Fabrication Coordinator. You’ll now find him beavering away in the workshop overseeing our builds for clients and designing our own storage and furniture.

How did you come to work with WMSH?

Whilst working in Portslade I would walk past the workshop every lunch break. My interest was piqued by the We Make Stuff Happen sign in the window. I wondered “what stuff do they make happen?” I approached the warehouse team who explained all the fun projects they were working on. I decided there and then I wanted to get involved… 2 weeks later I was!

Career highlight so far?

Designing a wheelchair accessible duck pond, for the London Wildlife Trust, at Walthamstow Wetlands. This was done in collaboration with Universal Studios to promote Migration, a film about ducks. Ducks are my favourite animal so it’s always good to do something for the duck community.

Ellie came to WMSH after completing a degree in product and furniture design at Kingston University. She now translates those skills into creating 3D print promotional items, interactive and unusual packaging for mailer campaigns, and bespoke props for filming and content.

Probably making a bob-sled look like a chocolate caterpillar cake for Team GB – but to be honest, I think my gauge for weird is a bit broken. None of what we do is exactly normal…
